Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the tournament, marking the first time CHAN features a tri-nation hosting format.

The event showcases 19 national teams composed entirely of home-based players, celebrating Africa’s domestic football talent.

Originally scheduled for early 2025, organizers postponed the tournament due to infrastructure delays, allowing the hosts more time to prepare.

The event serves as a key test run ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the same nations will stage.

Why 19 Teams?

The unusual number of participants stems from qualification adjustments. Initially, CAF allocated 19 slots, three per regional zone plus an extra spot for hosts CECAFA.

Uganda qualified automatically as co-hosts but also secureda place through the qualifiers, keeping the total at 19. Libya withdrew in November 2024, but CAF retained the original number by reallocating vacancies.

A Crucial Test for AFCON 2027

The tournament allows Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to evaluate upgraded stadiums, including Kasarani, Nyayo, and Talanta (Kenya) Benjamin Mkapa and Arusha (Tanzania) and Namboole, Hoima, and Lira (Uganda).

CAF officials will assess facilities, VAR readiness, and logistics, treating CHAN as a rehearsal for AFCON.

Past Winners & 2025 Favorites

Since its 2009 launch, CHAN has crowned DR Congo (twice), Tunisia, Libya, Morocco (back-to-back), and Senegal as champions.

This year, analysts tip Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, DR Congo, and the host nations of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as top contenders for the championship.

Morocco, the 2018 and 2020 winners, boast a strong domestic league and tactical discipline. Senegal enters with confidence, riding the momentum of their 2023 triumph, while Nigeria returns with a powerful squad that could challenge for the title.

The two-time champions, DR Congo, bring valuable experience and composure, and the home support in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda could fuel surprising performances.

Don’t miss the action—tune in to SuperSport, your ultimate destination for African football!
