In a stunning demonstration of endurance and community spirit, one of Kenya’s longest cycling events has officially begun, launching from the coastal city of Mombasa to Busia. Forty dedicated cyclists will undertake the grueling 1,150-kilometer journey to raise awareness about arthritis and gather funds for a modern arthritis clinic in Likuyani Sub-county. Sponsored by World Bicycle Relief (WBR), this epic ride will navigate some of Kenya’s most iconic landscapes, uniting communities in a shared mission to enhance healthcare access and promote mobility as a catalyst for positive change.
The cycling event showcases the collective determination of participants and supporters alike, as they embark on a demanding 1,150-kilometer journey through Kenya’s diverse landscapes. By raising awareness and funds, this initiative not only emphasizes the importance of addressing arthritis but also aims to foster a greater understanding of mobility issues within communities.
“Funds raised so far through this initiative have helped in constructing Phase 1 of arthritis clinic, on a 9-acre land. This ride Is not just about the kilometers we cover; it’s about the lives we touch and the awareness we create for better healthcare access,” said Moses Ogola, chairman of the
Arthritis Ride.
The upcoming arthritis clinic in Likuyani is designed to address the significant gap in specialized care by offering tailored treatment, education, and support for patients. “The statistics are alarming, but this ride is a symbol of hope,” stated Moses Ogola, Chair of the Arthritis Ride. “Our goal is to ensure that arthritis patients, especially those in rural regions, have access to the essential treatment and resources they require.”

The clinic in Likuyani will provide diagnostic services, treatment, and educational resources aimed at helping patients manage their arthritis and enhance their quality of life. Additionally, it seeks to close the health gap by delivering vital services, including diagnosis, treatment, and patient education.
“We are honored to support this cycling event. The Arthritis Ride showcases not only the impact of buffalo bicycles but also the power of collective action to address critical healthcare needs like arthritis,” said Maureen Kolenyo, East Africa Regional Director for World Bicycle
Relief.
In addition to their performance capabilities, Buffalo Bicycles bring a deeper meaning to the Arthritis Ride. Each bike not only supports the cyclists in their journey through challenging terrains but also embodies the spirit of the initiative—promoting health, resilience, and community support.
By choosing these durable bicycles, riders are not only equipped for their physical challenges but are also playing a part in a larger movement toward sustainability and accessibility in transportation.
Since 2010, World Bicycle Relief has provided more than 77,000 Buffalo Bicycles in Kenya, significantly enhancing mobility for healthcare workers, students, and small business owners. Specifically in the healthcare sector, WBR has supplied 19,407 bicycles to health workers, empowering them to increase their patient visits by as much as 35%. This improved access allows them to serve underserved communities more effectively and, ultimately, contributes to saving countless lives.
“Mobility is key to solving healthcare challenges, especially in rural areas where the challenge of distance often stands between patients and life-saving care. By empowering communities with
bicycles, we are not just providing a means of transport we are bridging the gap and bringing healthcare closer to those who need it most,” Says Maureen Kolenyo, Regional Director for East Africa at World Bicycle Relief Cycling.
The Arthritis Ride epitomizes the transformative power of cycling in advocating for fitness while simultaneously raising awareness about arthritis prevention and management. As cyclists journey through key towns like Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Kitale, culminating in Busia, they will not only be promoting physical health but also fostering community engagement. By stopping at Buffalo Bicycle shops along the route, these riders will connect with local residents, sharing valuable insights on mobility solutions and inspiring a collective vision for a healthier, more active Kenya.
“Apart from health benefits, we are cycling to promote a cycling culture that has a positive impact on climate change, as well as managing finances through cutting transportation costs among low-income earners who cover long distances to their places of work or learning institutions,” highlighted Moses Ogola, Chair of the Arthritis Ride.
