Bolt Launches Premium Ride Category, Targets Nairobi’s Growing Middle Class

By Eddah Waithaka

Bolt, Kenya’s top ride-hailing platform, has today introduced Bolt Comfort, a new premium ride category designed for Nairobi’s expanding middle class and professionals seeking high-quality transport.

The company projects that Bolt Comfort could make up 10% of total rides by 2025, driven by demand from passengers willing to pay slightly more for a superior travel experience.

This move is part of Bolt’s strategy to diversify its services, attract premium customers, and boost trip value in Kenya’s competitive mobility market.

Despite its premium features, Bolt Comfort remains 13% cheaper than similar offerings, positioning it as one of the most affordable high-comfort options in Nairobi.

Bolt Comfort offers newer, spacious vehicles (2016 models and above) with mandatory air-conditioning, top-rated drivers (4.8+ rating), and an ideal solution for business commutes, airport transfers, and formal engagements, initially rolling out in high-demand areas like Nairobi CBD, Westlands, Kilimani, and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), with pickup times under five minutes.

Bolt plans to expand to Kiambu County by December 2025, aiming for a fleet of over 1,000 Comfort vehicles.

Affordability Meets Premium Service

“Affordability remains key to Bolt’s operations,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, General Manager for Bolt Kenya and Tanzania.

“With Bolt Comfort, we’re offering a premium yet accessible option for riders who want better comfort, reliability, and professionalism.”

Kenya’s middle class now 45% of the population, according to the African Development Bank is fueling demand for improved services across sectors, including transport.

Nairobi’s growing base of professionals, entrepreneurs, and corporate employees increasingly seek rides that match their lifestyle and business needs.

Benefits for Drivers and Riders

Drivers must maintain a 4.8+ rating to qualify for higher earnings, while riders enjoy guaranteed air-conditioning and regular vehicle inspections every six months through AutoExpress.

“Whether you are a student or an executive, Bolt now offers a ride that fits your needs and budget,” added Kanyankole.

Bolt Comfort is now available in the Bolt app. Riders can select the category when booking for a smoother, more professional commute.
