Bunge La Mwananchi Defends Senator Hajj and Addresses Security Misrepresentations

By Eddah Waithaka

Bunge La Mwananchi gathered at Jevanjee Gardens in Nairobi today to clarify recent misleading information about Garissa County officials and the politicization of a security matter.

Speaking at the press briefing, Chairperson of the Bunge La Mwananchi, Francis Awino, said, “We wish to clarify the facts and address the misrepresentations that have surfaced. The allegations made against Senator Abdul Hajj regarding his involvement in clanism and clashes are unfounded. The unfortunate loss of six young members of Senator Hajj’s clan at the hands of another clan, does not implicate the Senator in any wrongdoing as alleged by Garissa Woman Representative.”

“Bunge La Mwananchi has since established that Senator Hajj, has taken proactive steps to prevent further escalation of violence. When these unfortunate incident happened, the Senator chose to compensate the bereaved families as a means to promote peace and discourage retaliatory actions from his clan members. Senator Hajj has consistently advocated for peaceful coexistence among all communities in Garissa County,” he added.

In light of these facts, Bunge La Mwananchi officials issued a statement retracting the misinformation and clarifying the true sequence of events.

“It is essential to refrain from spreading hearsay that can incite further discord among communities,” read the statement.

Further, the association urged the Garissa Woman Representative to adhere to the principles of leadership and integrity outlined in Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution.

“We would like to issue an apology to Senator Abdul Hajj for the baseless accusations in a step towards rectifying the situation.

The association also highlighted that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) may also consider summoning the Woman Representative to provide a statement on these matters.

“We further caution her from dancing on the graves of the young departed souls in Garissa County. It is crucial that public figures handle sensitive security issues with responsibility and refrain from using them as political tools for personal gain,” noted the Bunge La Mwananchi, Secretary General, Isaac Otieno.

The leaders of the association also urged all parties involved to prioritize the well-being of the community and work towards fostering harmony and understanding among its residents.
