Over the past five years, thousands of fans have descended upon this picturesque lakeside town to witness rally cars conquer its rugged, dusty terrains.
The event offers a unique blend of adrenaline-pumping action, breathtaking natural beauty, and vibrant cultural experiences.
But the Safari Rally is more than just a thrilling spectacle. It is a lifeline for Naivasha’s local economy. Small businesses, hawkers, and vendors have seized the opportunity to capitalize on the influx of visitors, turning the rally into a major income-generating event.
For four electrifying days, the vast ranches of Naivasha, typically home to wildlife, transform into bustling spectator stages packed with rally fans.
These stages double as thriving markets, where vendors sell everything from food and drinks to camping gear and souvenirs.
Amid the excitement, the seamless use of M-PESA has revolutionized transactions, making cashless payments a lifeline for both traders and customers in these often remote areas.

Samuel Osore, a Naivasha-based food vendor, has attended every Safari Rally since its return.
Selling chapatis, smokies, sausages, and samosas at the spectator stages, Osore credits M-PESA for streamlining his operations and enhancing customer satisfaction.
“I have always preferred cashless payments because they are convenient for me as a businessperson,” Osore explains.
“I use a Lipa Na M-PESA Till, which allows customers to make quick payments. This saves me time looking for change and helps me serve more customers efficiently. Most people do not carry physical cash anymore, so M-PESA is the preferred option. It is fast, safe, and convenient. For a small vendor like me, it’s a game-changer in such a fast-paced environment.” Saitoti Kennedy Menga, a leather goods vendor from Mlango Kubwa in Nairobi, shares a similar sentiment.
For the past two years, Menga has traveled to Naivasha with his friends to sell leather products and traditional hats, which have become a hit among rally fans.
“This is a great opportunity to make money,” Menga says. “Most of my customers prefer paying through M-PESA, and I like it too because it’s hassle-free. I don’t have to worry about carrying change, which can be a challenge in such places. Sometimes, customers even include the withdrawal charges, which boosts my profits.”

John Mwangi, a soft drink vendor from Nakuru, highlights the added benefits of services like Pochi La Biashara, which have further enhanced the cashless experience for traders.

“Last year was better for business due to the economy, but I still value coming here,” Mwangi says. “At the rally, I always recommend that customers use Pochi La Biashara. It prevents transaction reversals and secures my earnings.”
The widespread adoption of cashless payments has not only simplified transactions but also provided a sense of security for vendors operating in the fast-paced rally environment.
