CHAN 2025 Explodes Into Life as Host Nations Fight for Knockout Spots

By Eddah Waithaka

The 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has erupted into thrilling action across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with host nations battling fiercely for quarterfinal berths as the group stage reaches its climax.

Tanzania Charge Ahead in Group B

Tanzania’s Taifa Stars made a statement in their opener, overpowering Burkina Faso 2-0 with goals from Stephano Mbonde and Habibu Kondo.

Riding a wave of home support, they now face Mauritania on Wednesday (7 August) in a match that could seal their knockout fate. A win would put them on the brink of their best-ever CHAN campaign.

Kenya Stun DR Congo, Face Angola Test

Kenya’s Harambee Stars shocked two-time champions DR Congo with a gritty 1-0 victory, thanks to Enock Wanyama’s late header.

But a tougher challenge looms on Thursday (7 August) against Angola, who edged Morocco in their opener. Coach Engin Firat must rally his side again before a potential group-decider against Morocco on Sunday (10 August).

Uganda in Crisis After Algeria Thrashing

Uganda’s Cranes suffered a brutal 3-0 defeat to Algeria, leaving their tournament hopes hanging by a thread. A must-win clash against Guinea on Friday (8 August) awaits, another loss could spell early elimination.

Coach Morley Byekwaso must fix defensive leaks and inject urgency before their final group game against Niger.

Every match streams live on SuperSport (DStv & GOtv), with key fixtures including Burkina Faso vs. Central African Republic (Wed 6 Aug, 16:00) and Mauritania vs. Tanzania (19:00), followed by Angola vs. Kenya (Thu 7 Aug, 18:00) in a blockbuster clash, before Guinea vs. Uganda (Fri 8 Aug, 19:00) in a do-or-die showdown for the Cranes.
