The Africa Conference on Deafness 2024 will occur from November 27 to 29 in Nairobi. This event will bring together policymakers, advocates, and community leaders to discuss and promote the rights and empowerment of deaf individuals and those with disabilities throughout the continent. Under the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” the event represents a commitment from governments to enhance the voices and leadership of individuals with disabilities, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
“Government is promoting economic empowerment for persons with disabilities through targeted programs, During Financial Year 2023-2024 574 self-help groups were connected to funding resources such as Uwezo Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, Youth Enterprise Fund and National Youth Opportunities towards advancement (NYOTA)”, said Government Spokesman Dr. Isaac Mwaura.

Additionally, the government acknowledges that, to ensure accessible quality education for individuals with disabilities, six educational institutions have been upgraded. This enhancement aims to improve both enrollment capacity and the overall quality of their educational programs.
“Scholarships of 2,232 learners with disabilities have been provided with extended monthly cash stipends to 47,000 households caring for persons with severe disabilities and additional 18,291 beneficiaries were enrolled totalling to 65,291 under the cash transfer program”, noted Dr. Mwaura.
The government has initiated a training program through the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) to enhance sign language skills. In addition, assistive devices have been distributed to 4,222 individuals, including wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, and screen readers. The Albinism Support Programme has also made significant contributions, providing sunscreen lotion to 3,840 beneficiaries, cancer screenings for 1,727 individuals, and eye care services for 500 students, specifically addressing the unique needs of people living with albinism.
“Africa conference on deafness 2024 is a unique opportunity to collaborate, share insights and forge a collective path foward in meeting the needs of The Deaf community and persons with disabilities,” added the Government Spokesperson.
