The government has today unveiled a comprehensive risk assessment report aimed at Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs). Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, announced the initiative on Thursday, signaling a proactive approach to understanding and managing the challenges faced by the nonprofit sector.
The report seeks to protect local and international NGOs, Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), Companies Limited by Guarantee, Trusts, and Faith-Based Organisations from being misused for illegal purposes.
During the launch, PS Omollo highlighted the crucial contribution of the non-profit sector to community development and service delivery. Nonetheless, he recognized that these organizations funnel illegal funds.

“Non-Profit Organisations are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, with some registered entities acting as conduits for transferring illicit funds. In certain instances, legitimate resources intended for humanitarian causes are being diverted to support terrorist activities.” Omollo said.
Lindon Nicolas, the Acting CEO of the Public Benefit Organization Regulatory Authority, emphasized the importance of complete compliance among all non-state organizations. He cautioned that failure to adhere to established regulations could lead to deregistration as part of ongoing efforts to reform and maintain integrity within the sector.
The released report plays a vital role in strengthening the security of non-profit organizations, highlighting their susceptibility to exploitation.
Further, Omollo noted that these initiatives are part of Kenya’s continuous efforts to strike a balance between the necessity for aid, while also prioritizing the protection of both national and international security.
