Historic Moment for East Africa: Public Invited to Tour Nairobi Kenya Temple

By Eddah Waithaka

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has opened the doors of its newly completed Nairobi Kenya Temple for public tours, marking the first LDS temple in the region.

Open House Details

From Thursday, April 17, to Saturday, May 3, 2025, the public can explore the sacred temple during daily open house tours (excluding Sundays).

Visitors will begin their experience at the adjacent Latter-day Saint meetinghouse before embarking on a 40-minute guided walk-through of the temple’s beautifully designed interior.

Located at Mountain View, Hinga Road, off Waiyaki Way in Nairobi, the temple stands as a spiritual beacon for over 80,000 church members across seven African nations.

Following the open house, the temple will be formally dedicated on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in a sacred ceremony reserved for faithful members.

A Long-Awaited Milestone

The announcement of a Kenyan temple first came in April 2017 from then-Church President Thomas S. Monson, with construction officially beginning in September 2021.

Now completed, the Nairobi Kenya Temple becomes the 204th operating temple worldwide for the LDS Church.

The Sacred Role of Temples

Unlike regular meetinghouses where weekly worship services occur, Latter-day Saint temples serve as dedicated spaces for sacred ordinances, including eternal marriages, baptisms for the deceased, and family sealings—ceremonies that unite loved ones beyond mortal life.

This historic opening represents not just a new place of worship, but a symbol of growth for the LDS faith in Africa, offering deeper spiritual connections for members across the region.
