Homa Bay County to Host 2025 Madaraka Day Celebrations

By Eddah Waithaka

Homa Bay County will host the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo revealed on Thursday, February 27.

The announcement came during his visit to the county, where he confirmed that the event will take place at the Raila Odinga Stadium.

Omollo, who chairs the National Celebrations Steering Committee, explained that the decision to shift the celebrations from Kitui County to Homa Bay was necessary due to logistical arrangements. Initially, Kitui County was slated to host Madaraka Day on June 1, while Homa Bay was set to hold Mashujaa Day on October 20.

However, Kitui will now host Mashujaa Day instead. “We had initially planned to host Mashujaa Day in Homa Bay County, but due to the current arrangements, it has become necessary to hold Madaraka Day here,” Omollo stated.

He emphasized the government’s tradition of rotating national celebrations across the country to promote inclusivity. The 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations will focus on the blue economy, a theme that aligns with Homa Bay’s strategic location.

“These celebrations will center on the blue economy and maritime activities. There is no better place to celebrate this than Homa Bay, which boasts 80 percent of Lake Victoria’s shoreline,” Omollo added.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga welcomed the announcement, noting that this marks the first time the county will host a national holiday event. She pledged her administration’s full cooperation with the steering committee to ensure the event’s success.

The move underscores the government’s commitment to decentralizing national events and spotlighting regions with unique economic potential, such as Homa Bay’s thriving blue economy sector.
