Speaking during the event, Gloria Wawira, CEO of the National Youth Council, encouraged the young girls in attendance to boldly embrace STEM and leverage it to tackle real-life challenges. She emphasized that young people possess the power to address some of the world’s most pressing issues.

She highlighted the importance of confronting gender stereotypes and biases that obstruct entry and advancement in STEM, while also advocating for stronger mentorship and leadership programs to support women in the field.

“The world of science and technology is rapidly expanding, providing countless career paths for women. Whether it’s artificial intelligence, robotics, medicine, environmental sustainability, coding, or data analysis, there’s an opportunity for every interest and every strength,” Wawira remarked during the event.

She encouraged women to embrace STEM and technology, urging them to shape the future as creators rather than just consumers.

Hon. Harriet Chiggai, President’s Advisor on Women Rights, underscored the need to accelerate the inclusion of youth and women in STEM. She emphasized that strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors can foster greater gender equality and drive innovation.

Chiggai urged the young women present to pursue careers in the STEM field, encouraging them to leverage their strengths as women to develop creative solutions for today’s challenges and make the world a better place.

“The world is evolving, and digital skills are more in demand than ever. Women bring diverse perspectives and innovative solutions that enrich science and technology. You are not just participants; you are the architects of the future. So, step forward with confidence, challenge societal norms, and let your ambitions take you to new heights,” noted Chiggai.

Five girls have successfully qualified for the Regional Finals scheduled for March 2025 in South Africa. While encouraging young women to seize these opportunities, Maggie emphasized the importance of advancing women’s participation in STEM as a strategic imperative rather than merely a matter of compliance.

“We recognize that diversity is not just a clauseit is a key driver of success, said Maggie. By partnering with universities and corporations, we aim to onboard more women and girls into STEM, ensuring a brighter future for all,” Hon. Harriet Chiggai concluded with a powerful message.

Kenya’s digital transformation agenda provides equal opportunities for women and girls to enter and excel in the STEM field. Now is the time for us to innovate, lead, and break barriers.

Today’s event reminded everyone of the urgent need to create an environment where women and girls can thrive in STEM, allowing them to contribute to innovative solutions and the ongoing growth of Kenya’s digital economy.
