Huawei Launches Intensive Bootcamp for Kenya’s Top ICT Students Ahead of Regional Finals

By Eddah Waithaka

Huawei today officially opened the Huawei ICT Competition 2025/2026 Regional Final Bootcamp Training, selecting 21 exceptional students from nearly 3,000 applicants nationwide.

The rigorous national process identified top talent from universities including Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), the University of Nairobi, and Moi University.

For the first time, the competition also includes a team from PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute, marking a significant expansion into Kenya’s TVET sector.

This year’s participation follows a major partnership. In 2025, Kenya’s State Department for Technical Vocational Education and Training (SDTVET) signed a three-year collaboration with Huawei to advance digital skills.

The agreement commits Huawei to establishing 150 ICT Academies in TVET institutions, certifying 1,000 students annually, and training 150 instructors each year.

“This competition proves that TVET students can compete at the highest level globally, and we are proud to see PC Kinyanjui represented for the first time,” said Principal Lucy Anampiu during the bootcamp’s opening ceremony.

The Huawei ICT Academy Manager, Michael Kamau, outlined the bootcamp’s structure and goals to students. “This bootcamp prepares you not just to compete, but to excel regionally and globally,” he stated.

The competition focuses on four tracks: Network, Cloud & AI, Computing, and Innovation. Of the 21 selected students, three come from the TVET category, while 18 represent universities.

Female students comprise one-third of the cohort.Industry engagement featured prominently. Mathew Kiptoo, a Hiring Manager at Huawei Technologies Kenya, addressed students about career pathways.

He formally invited eligible participants to apply for the Huawei Graduate Program Training in July.“We are not only looking for technical skills, but also attitude, innovation, and willingness to learn,” Kiptoo said.

Students expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity. “The guidance from Huawei experts makes me confident that I can compete at the regional and even global level,” said Stephen, a top Network Track student from JKUAT.

The bootcamp provides advanced technical training, career guidance, and a pathway to the global stage. Top teams from the upcoming regional final, which will include over 62 teams from 15 countries, will advance to the Global Final in China in June 2026.

“Reaching the Global Final in China places students among the best ICT talent worldwide,” added the Huawei ICT Academy Manager.

The Huawei ICT Competition continues to serve as a key platform for talent development and industry-academia collaboration, supporting Kenya’s broader digital transformation agenda.
