Strong hydropower generation is stabilizing Kenya’s electricity supply and easing pressure on power bills, delivering a much-needed festive season boost to households and industries across the nation.

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) announced its Seven Forks hydro cascade is producing robust output, flooding the national grid with abundant, low-cost renewable energy as global prices remain volatile.
“Kenyans can expect stable supply during the festive season into the new year,” said KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga.
He confirmed the system generated 473.14MW on the morning of December 8 against an installed capacity of 600.4MW, reinforcing hydropower’s role as the anchor of national electricity stability. Current dam readings show all major reservoirs operating safely within optimal ranges.

Masinga Dam, the country’s largest, holds at 1,054.49 meters, comfortably above its 1,037-meter minimum. Kamburu, Gitaru, Kindaruma, and Kiambere dams also maintain strong levels.
“These healthy reservoir levels signal sustained generation capacity across the cascade,” Eng. Njenga stated, attributing the performance to a disciplined water management program that ensures reliable output even during drier seasons.
The surge provides critical economic insulation. As the nation’s cheapest power source, strong hydropower generation moderates overall electricity costs and reduces reliance on more expensive thermal plants.
This dynamic directly protects consumers and businesses from price shocks.”Hydropower remains the backbone of Kenya’s energy affordability and a stabilizer of national supply,” emphasized Eng. Njenga.
“This strong performance reflects sound planning and a long-term view of national energy security.” Looking ahead, KenGen reaffirmed its commitment to investing in watershed conservation, reforestation, and climate-resilience initiatives to safeguard long-term water sustainability.
“As the world grapples with climate volatility and rising energy prices, Kenya stands out,” Eng. Njenga said. “KenGen ensures stability today while building a clean-energy future that is environmentally secure and economically competitive.”
With the Seven Forks cascade performing strongly and demand poised to grow, the company anticipates sustained momentum, strengthening Kenya’s position as a renewable energy leader well into the new year.
