Inspector General Douglas Kanja today reaffirmed the National Police Service’s (NPS) dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and public safety.
The NPS, established under Article 243 of the Kenyan Constitution, operates independently under the Office of the Inspector General. It upholds its constitutional mandate to ensure national security while respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“The National Police Service maintains strict accountability through a multi-agency oversight framework, including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, the National Police Service Commission, and Parliament,” said Kanja.
“Our Internal Affairs Unit actively investigates and addresses all complaints against officers.”
He acknowledged isolated incidents of misconduct but emphasized the NPS’s commitment to swift and transparent disciplinary action.
“We remain focused on delivering professional, efficient, and people-centric policing for a safe and prosperous Kenya,” he stated.
Kanja also clarified the legal framework governing public demonstrations, citing Article 37 of the Constitution and the Public Order Act.
“While every person has the right to peaceful assembly, any unlawful or riotous conduct will be met with firm and lawful police action,” he warned.
He further cautioned against unauthorized access to protected areas under the Protected Areas Act. Praising police officers for their dedication, Kanja called them “Kenya’s unsung heroes” who work tirelessly to defend the nation.
He urged public cooperation, asking citizens to refrain from provoking officers and to report suspicious activities through emergency lines (999, 911, 112, 0800 722 203, or #FichuakwaDCI).
“Kenya is our only homeland, let us protect it together,” he concluded. “The NPS remains steadfast in safeguarding lives and property, and we assure all Kenyans of our unwavering commitment to security.”
