KENYA BOOSTS DIGITAL TALENT AS 65 TVET TRAINERS MASTER AI & CYBERSECURITY WITH HUAWEI

By Eddah Waithaka

The Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) and Huawei Technologies Kenya today celebrated the graduation of 65 technical trainers, marking a major leap in building the country’s advanced digital skills pipeline.

The trainers, all lecturers from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions nationwide, successfully completed an intensive 15-day “Train the Trainer” program.

The curriculum covered cutting-edge fields, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Communication, Cloud Computing, and Cybersecurity.

Dr. Joseph Kanyi, Director of TVET representing the Principal Secretary, officiated the ceremony. He emphasized the program’s critical role in Kenya’s economic future.

“This program prepares Kenya’s workforce for a rapidly changing digital future,” Dr. Kanyi stated. “The knowledge gained here will directly impact students, institutions, and our national competitiveness.”

Huawei awarded each graduate a voucher to sit for a global certification exam, a step that will grant them industry-recognized qualifications.

The graduation activates a new national training network. Seven of the certified trainers will join the central Academy Support Centre at KSTVET, while 55 will return to operationalize Huawei ICT Academies in their home institutions, directly cascading skills to thousands of students.

This initiative builds on a partnership launched in 2021, which has already established 11 Huawei ICT Academies across Kenya. In a significant milestone, the Kenya School of TVET earned designation as Huawei’s official Academy Support Centre for the country in May 2024.

The partnership is now set for massive expansion. Following a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the program will reach 150 TVET institutions and target 10,000 beneficiaries over the next three years.

Yuta Leng, Public Affairs Director at Huawei Technologies Kenya, reaffirmed the company’s commitment.

“Kenya is a rising technology hub in Africa, and we remain committed to expanding opportunities for both trainers and students,” said Leng. He also highlighted the global Huawei ICT Competition as a key platform for Kenyan talent.

The State Department for TVET directed the graduates to immediately cascade their training, manage their new ICT Academies effectively, and provide regular progress reports.

Dr. Kanyi confirmed plans to deepen the collaboration, saying, “We appreciate Huawei’s continued investment and look forward to signing a new MoU to further streamline and expand our ICT talent development initiatives.”

The program solidifies a strategic push to align TVET training with the demands of the modern digital economy, equipping Kenyan youth with globally competitive skills.
