Kenya Publishers Association Confirms Fast Distribution of CBC Textbooks to Schools

By Eddah Waithaka

The Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) has confirmed to parents, educators, and the public that textbooks for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) are widely accessible, and the distribution process to schools is nearly finished.

The Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) reports that the distribution of Grade 9 textbooks to public schools is nearly complete, in accordance with the government’s one-to-one (1:1) textbook initiative. More than 80% of these textbooks have already been shipped, with the rest set to arrive at schools by January 13, 2025. The books encompass a range of subjects and are being provided by several publishers, including Spotlight Publishers, Moran Publishers, the Kenya Literature Bureau, and East African Education.

For Grade 9 textbooks, KPA has announced that they are available in bookstores for private schools and parents wishing to make a purchase. For those who encounter challenges in obtaining the books, KPA invites them to reach out for support at +254 724 255 848. In response to suggestions made by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER), the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has updated the CBC curriculum, resulting in a decrease in the number of subject areas offered.

As part of this restructuring, some subjects were merged to create a more integrated learning approach. Home Science and Agriculture & Nutrition were combined into Agriculture, while Integrated Science and Health Education were merged into Integrated Science. Social Studies was also expanded to include Life Skills, and Computer Science, Business Studies, and Pre-Technical Studies were consolidated into Pre-Technical Studies. Additionally, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education, and Sports were grouped under Creative Arts and Sports.

To accommodate these curriculum changes, publishers have developed new textbooks, which are currently undergoing final corrections by KICD. The revised books for Grades 5 and 6 are expected to be available by the end of January 2025, while those for Grades 7 and 8 will be released by the end of February 2025.Despite these adjustments, KPA has assured the public that sufficient textbooks remain available for Creative Arts and Sports, Pre-Technical Studies, and Agriculture.

Current educational materials continue to satisfy the needs of both learners and teachers during the transition to the revised curriculum. In addition, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has sanctioned books from more than fifteen publishers, such as Longhorn Publishers, Oxford University Press, Storymoja, Mentor Publishers, and Booklyst. This approval guarantees that students and educators have access to a diverse selection of high-quality learning resources.

In addition to CBC textbooks, the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) has highlighted the extensive collection of books available for lifelong learning. Bookstores nationwide are well-stocked with children’s storybooks, novellas for junior school students, and fiction for senior school learners. With this commitment, KPA reinforces its dedication to providing both students and teachers with continuous access to high-quality educational resources as the country adapts to the updated CBC curriculum.
