Kenya Railways celebrated eight years of the Madaraka Express service today, highlighting its transformative impact on the nation’s economy, trade, and mobility.
Since its launch in 2017, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has revolutionized transport, offering faster, safer, and more efficient movement of goods and passengers across the country.
Freight Service Boosts Trade and Eases Port Congestion
The Madaraka Express Freight Service has slashed logistics costs by providing a high-capacity, reliable alternative to road transport. By moving millions of tonnes of cargo efficiently, the SGR has significantly decongested the Port of Mombasa, speeding up trade flows and supporting regional commerce.
Passenger Service Connects Kenyans, Spurs Economic Activity
Meanwhile, the Madaraka Express Passenger Service has transformed long-distance travel for millions.
With over 15.3 million passengers served, the SGR has become the preferred choice for affordable, comfortable, and secure journeys.
The service has also spurred growth in domestic tourism and small businesses along its corridor, boosting local economies.
Kenya Railways Chairman Highlights Milestones and Future Plans
Speaking during the anniversary event at Nairobi Terminus, Kenya Railways Board Chairman Mr. Abdi Bare reflected on the SGR’s journey, from its historic launch in 2017 to its expansion to Naivasha in 2019.
“The Madaraka Express has not just moved people and cargo—it has moved Kenya forward,” said Bare. “Despite challenges like COVID-19 disruptions, we have maintained steady growth, transporting over 39.78 million tonnes of cargo and expanding services to meet rising demand.”

A Vision for the Future
As Kenya Railways looks ahead, the focus remains on enhancing efficiency, expanding infrastructure, and solidifying the SGR’s role as East Africa’s premier rail service.
“Together, we will ensure railway transport remains a pillar of Kenya’s growth,” Bare affirmed.
The Madaraka Express continues to stand as a testament to Kenya’s progress—bridging distances, boosting trade, and driving the nation toward a brighter future.
