Kenyan Women Demand Better Healthcare, Dignity, and Economic Empowerment, New Report Reveals

By Eddah Waithaka

A new nationwide report by White Ribbon Alliance Kenya and FIND has revealed what Kenyan women and girls want most, affordable healthcare, dignity in hospitals, mental health support, and economic empowerment.

Based on 97,908 responses from women across 44 counties, the report highlights key demands that articulate what women want.

Affordable healthcare with screening for chronic illnesses, respect and dignity in hospitals, comprehensive health education and life skills, mental health and stress support, recognition of self-care as a right rather than a luxury, safe transport to health facilities, access to clean water, nutrition, and hygiene products, support for menopause and aging health needs, and economic empowerment to afford care.

Voices from the Ground

Moreen Isula, a woman from Narok County, shared her experience, “Before, women in Narok felt voiceless. But now, through White Ribbon Alliance, we know our rights. Women are now trusted, and many are breadwinners.”

Angela Nguku, co-founder of White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, explained, “Women told us they’re tired of being ignored. They want their voices heard in hospitals, policies, and everywhere decisions are made. That’s why we spoke to nearly 100,000 women, including young mothers, refugees, and indigenous communities.”

Men as Allies

Stephen Ole Paan, a men’s advocate from Narok, acknowledged challenges in changing attitudes, “At first, men asked, ‘Why defend women?’ But now, we see progress. Communities are slowly accepting that women deserve respect and healthcare access.”

The report calls on policymakers and healthcare providers to actively invest in women’s health programs, enhance hospital conditions, and expand economic opportunities for women.

Include marginalized women in decision-making

“This isn’t just data, it’s a movement,” Nguku emphasized. “Women are demanding change, and we must act.”

White Ribbon Alliance Kenya plans to push for policy reforms while expanding grassroots education on women’s health rights.
