Mount Kenya University (MKU), Strathmore University, and Riara University have partnered to launch the first-ever University PR Challenge, a groundbreaking competition designed to identify and nurture Kenya’s future public relations stars.
On August 26, 2025, student teams from these institutions will compete at Aga Khan University, the event’s academic partner, tackling real-world PR case studies crafted by industry experts.
The challenge focuses on crisis communication, brand strategy, digital engagement, and corporate reputation management, testing participants’ ability to think strategically under pressure.
A panel of top PR and media professionals is currently reviewing submissions. One anonymous judge remarked, “The students’ creativity and strategic depth are impressive. They’re already demonstrating the skills the PR industry demands.”
Faculty mentors from each university are guiding the teams. Koome Ikunyua, MKU’s coordinator, praised the initiative, saying, “This challenge bridges classroom theory and real-world execution, giving students invaluable hands-on experience.”
Elizabeth Amollo of Riara University called the competition “essential for building confidence and professional competence,” while Dr. Esther Kingo’ri of Strathmore University highlighted its role in fostering collaboration and strategic thinking.
The University PR Challenge aims to become an annual event, aligning academic training with industry needs while promoting innovation and ethical PR practices.
Winners will be announced just before Africa Global Public Relations Week (AGPRW), gaining mentorship, internships, and industry recognition setting the stage for Kenya’s next generation of PR leaders.
This pioneering initiative marks a major step in shaping the future of public relations in Kenya and beyond.
