Kibera Soccer Women FC claimed the FKF Women’s Cup trophy after edging out Vihiga Queens 1-0 in a thrilling final at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium today.
Super-sub Stellah Odhiambo struck the decisive goal in the 90th minute, slotting home a pinpoint cross from Yvonne Idagiza to spark wild celebrations among Kibera’s players and fans.
Earlier, Faith Mboya nearly put Kibera ahead in the 14th minute, but her thunderous shot rattled the crossbar, leaving the first half goalless.
Vihiga Queens pushed hard for an equalizer in stoppage time, but Kibera’s resolute defense held firm to seal the victory.
Coaches React
Kibera’s head coach, David Busego, lauded his team’s determination. “My girls showed incredible resilience,” he said.
“We wasted chances early but corrected our mistakes in the second half. The Locker Room Bonus initiative has motivated the players, and we’re grateful to betPawa for supporting women’s football.”
Vihiga Queens’ coach Boniface Nyamunyamu rued a late lapse in focus. “One moment of lost concentration cost us,” he admitted.
“But credit to both teams, it was a great match. We’ll analyze our errors and return stronger.”
Individual Honors
Kibera’s Faith Mboya earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, while Vihiga’s Diana Cheron took the Golden Boot.
Vihiga goalkeeper Vivian Khayati claimed the Best Goalkeeper prize. As champions, Kibera pocketed KSh 650,000, with runners-up Vihiga Queens receiving KSh 100,000, courtesy of sponsors betPawa.
betPawa Praises Tournament Growth
betPawa Kenya partner Cynthia Onyango hailed the high-quality football on display. “Today proved the immense talent in Kenyan women’s football,” she said.
“We’re proud to empower players through initiatives like the Locker Room Bonus, which has distributed KSh 4.3 million directly to teams this season.”
This year’s tournament featured 32 teams, with Kibera and Vihiga advancing after semifinal wins over Kenya Police Bullets and Bungoma Queens, respectively.
The victory cements Kibera’s rising status in Kenyan women’s football.
