M-PESA and Jr. NBA Host Elite Basketball Camp for Top 100 Junior Players in Mombasa

By Eddah Waithaka

M-PESA, in partnership with the Jr. NBA, today trained 100 top junior basketball players (50 boys and 50 girls) at an Elite Basketball Camp at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa.

The camp prepared the young athletes for the upcoming Jr. NBA National Finals, scheduled for Thursday and Friday at the same venue.

The camp sharpened the players’ skills through drills, scrimmages, 5v5 tournaments, and scouting sessions. Coaches selected the 100 participants from regional tournaments held in Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Kisumu.

Wholly Kawemba, a coach from Umoja Junior School in Changamwe, praised the initiative: “This camp has given my players a crucial advantage ahead of the finals. We’ve improved key skills like dribbling, which we’ll definitely use in the competition.”

Esther Waititu, Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer, emphasized M-PESA’s role in empowering youth: “Through our partnership with Jr. NBA Africa, we’re merging sports with opportunity. Beyond basketball, we’re teaching financial literacy via M-PESA Go—because greatness extends beyond the court into everyday life.”

Michael Finley, NBA Africa’s Kenya Country Lead, highlighted the program’s success, “The regional tournaments delivered outstanding talent. Today, with M-PESA, we honed the top 100 players’ skills, and scouts identified exceptional prospects.”

The first M-PESA Jr. NBA edition reached over 10,000 boys and girls through games, NBA Fit clinics, and M-PESA Go financial literacy sessions. The National Finals will see 16 teams (8 boys’ and 8 girls’ squads) battle for victory on Thursday and Friday in Mombasa.
