This weekend, the M-PESA Jr. NBA tournament will take over Mombasa as 40 teams, made up of 480 boys and girls, compete for the regional title at the Aga Khan Academy.

The tournament promises high-energy 5×5 basketball games, with winners in both the boys’ and girls’ categories set to receive smartphones and airtime courtesy of Safaricom’s M-PESA.
Additionally, standout players will earn a chance to attend an elite basketball development camp, opening doors to further opportunities. Ahead of the games, participants will engage in financial literacy clinics through M-PESA Go, highlighting Safaricom’s commitment to empowering youth beyond sports.

Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, emphasized the tournament’s dual focus: “Through our partnership with Jr. NBA, we are not only promoting sports but also equipping young people with financial literacy skills via M-PESA Go. This initiative reflects our 18-year journey of supporting talent across Kenya.”
The 2025 M-PESA Jr. NBA program launched earlier this year with a Fit clinic in Nairobi, where over 100 local coaches participated in life-skills seminars and coaching workshops.
The first regional tournament in Nairobi saw St. Johns’ from Korogocho and Olympic from Kibera clinch the boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively. The program aims to provide basketball development and financial literacy training to more than 10,000 boys and girls across Kenya.
After Mombasa, the tournament will move to Eldoret and Kisumu, culminating in a national championship in collaboration with School Games.
The top 50 boys and 50 girls from the regional tournaments will secure spots at the prestigious Top 100 elite basketball development camp in April.
As the action shifts to Mombasa this weekend, all eyes will be on the young athletes as they showcase their skills, chase their dreams, and take another step toward a brighter future.
