The Matatu and Boda Boda Operators Federation has strongly condemned the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for suspending Super Metro Sacco’s operations, calling the move a “blanket condemnation” that unfairly targets the entire fleet.
Federation chairperson Kushian Muchiri criticized NTSA’s decision, arguing that the agency should have penalized only non-compliant vehicles instead of imposing a sweeping ban.
“If someone has committed a violation, let authorities arrest that person. We oppose this blanket condemnation of Super Metro, which voters have recognized as one of the best saccos for three consecutive years.” How does it go from the best to the worst overnight due to public pressure?” Muchiri stated.
He emphasized that the suspension has paralyzed operations and urged NTSA to reverse its decision. “We call on the NTSA board to repeal the suspension. Let investigations continue, and based on facts, NTSA can advise us on the necessary steps,” he said.
The federation also threatened to go on strike in solidarity with Super Metro if NTSA fails to address their grievances. Super Metro defended its operations, claiming NTSA acted hastily under public pressure.
The recent fare dispute led to the suspension of Super Metro services after passenger Gilbert Thuo Kimani was thrown out of a moving vehicle.
Kimani reportedly paid Sh50 instead of the required Sh80, leading to an altercation that resulted in fatal injuries.
NTSA’s decision to suspend Super Metro came after a comprehensive analysis revealed multiple violations of road safety laws and public service vehicle regulations.

The authority flagged 294 out of the company’s 523 vehicles for non-compliance, citing issues such as expired inspection certificates, missing speed limiters, and vehicles operating beyond the 80km/h speed limit.
Additionally, authorities ordered 42 drivers to undergo retesting because they violated speed regulations. To lift the suspension, NTSA has mandated Super Metro to present all non-compliant vehicles for inspection, retest the flagged drivers, and provide proof of compliance with employment regulations, including signed contracts and statutory remittance records.
The company must also ensure all drivers complete a road safety sensitization program facilitated by NTSA officers. The suspension has sparked widespread debate, with stakeholders questioning its fairness and impact on commuters and the transport sector.
While NTSA maintains the move is necessary to ensure safety, critics argue it disproportionately affects a company previously recognized for its service quality.
As investigations continue, the public awaits further action from both NTSA and Super Metro to resolve the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Matatu and Boda Boda Operators Federation threatens to strike, signaling potential disruptions in the transport sector if officials do not meet their demands.
