The Ministry of Cooperatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has unveiled The Best of Kenya Co-Operatives Book, a compelling compilation showcasing the resilience, innovation, and transformative impact of Kenya’s cooperative movement. This initiative highlights the remarkable success stories of cooperatives, celebrating their contributions to economic growth and community empowerment.
Speaking during the launch, Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya emphasized the significance of the timing, coinciding with the United Nations’ declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC). He stated, “This global acknowledgment reinforces the critical role cooperatives play in driving sustainable development, fostering economic inclusion, and uplifting communities.”
The Cabinet Secretary also underscored the transformative role of cooperatives in driving socio-economic progress, noting that the sector has become a model for sustainable development and community empowerment. Through the publication, the Ministry aims to inspire further innovation and collaboration within the cooperative movement, while solidifying Kenya’s position as a leader in cooperative excellence. “By sharing these stories, we not only celebrate our achievements but also pave the way for future growth and inclusivity,” he added, as conveyed by Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemi, who delivered the CS speech on his behalf.

The publication will also serve as a platform to recognize the unsung heroes of Kenya’s cooperative sector, celebrating their innovative approaches and unwavering dedication to community development. By documenting these achievements, the Ministry aims to foster a deeper understanding of the cooperative model’s potential to address economic challenges and create inclusive growth.
“Through this initiative, we hope to ignite a renewed sense of purpose and collaboration, ensuring that the cooperative movement continues to thrive as a catalyst for national progress,” the Cabinet Secretary affirmed.
Further, Dr. Oparanya praised the authors, contributors, and stakeholders for their unwavering dedication to bringing the book to fruition. He recognized their efforts in documenting and celebrating the remarkable success stories of Kenya’s cooperative movement as truly commendable. “As we launch this initiative today, let us reaffirm our commitment to strengthening the cooperative sector,” the Cabinet Secretary emphasized.
