Over 400 juniors from the Coast region today participated in a financial literacy session organized by M-PESA Go during the M-PESA Jr. NBA tournament at Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa.
The event combined sports and education, empowering young participants with essential financial management skills.
Kawira Mugambi, M-PESA Go Growth Manager, emphasized the importance of introducing financial literacy to children as early as age 10.
“Today, we witnessed an incredible turnout of nearly 500 kids for the M-PESA Jr. NBA tournament here in Mombasa. Before the games began, we conducted financial literacy clinics to educate and empower them on key financial management principles such as saving and the importance of embracing healthy financial habits,” Mugambi said.
The financial literacy clinics took place in the morning, ahead of the basketball games. The sessions aimed to equip the young participants with practical knowledge to help them manage their finances effectively in the future.
The tournament featured 40 teams, with 480 boys and girls competing in 5×5 matchups during the knockout stage. The qualifiers from Saturday’s games will advance to the semifinals and finals on Sunday at the same venue.
Regional champions will receive smartphones and airtime from Safaricom M-PESA. Coach Wholly Kawemba from Umoja JSS Changamwe praised the event’s unique mix of sports and education.
“I have participated in many tournaments, but the M-PESA Jr. NBA experience stands out. It has not only provided my players with a great sporting platform but also invaluable financial literacy knowledge through M-PESA Go. Learning about savings and investment at such a young age is crucial in shaping a financially responsible future generation,” Kawemba said.
The M-PESA Jr. NBA tournament significantly impacts youth development by combining athletic competition with essential financial education.
