The National Alternative Alliance (NAA) today issued a scathing critique of President William Ruto’s government, warning that Kenya is “sliding into anarchy” and demanding immediate action to halt the crisis.
Speaking at a press conference at After 40 Hotel in Nairobi, the NAA declared, “Kenya is burning.” The coalition accused the administration of failing to uphold the Constitution, perpetuating human rights abuses, and fueling unrest through corruption, unemployment, and state-sanctioned violence.
Saba Saba Anniversary Amid Rising Unrest
The statement comes just six days before Kenya marks 25 years since the historic Saba Saba protests of July 7, 1990, which birthed multi-party democracy.
This year’s anniversary unfolds against a backdrop of Gen-Z-led demonstrations, police brutality, abductions, and economic despair.
The NAA has articulated several urgent demands, which include an immediate end to abductions and extrajudicial killings, the unconditional release of arrested activists, compensation for the families of protest victims, the withdrawal of inflammatory statements made by government officials, the disbandment of security chiefs implicated in violence, and the initiation of a multi-sectoral, civic-led national dialogue to address the ongoing issues and restore trust in governance.
Corruption Scandals Weighing Down Ruto’s Government
The NAA has highlighted over 15 unresolved corruption scandals, among which are the Global Fund/KEMSA mosquito nets scandal, the 17 billion shilling fuel scandal, the Adani Airport and energy deals, the Sudan gold and weapons smuggling scandal, and the Haiti deployment controversy, emphasizing the pressing need for accountability and transparency in governance.
“Kenyans do not want lectures, they demand action,” the statement read, accusing the government of “recycling failed leaders” instead of delivering real change.
Youth Unemployment Crisis
With youth unemployment fueling protests, the NAA has proposed a series of measures aimed at addressing the escalating discontent among the younger population, including recruiting 20,000 new police officers and 10,000 Kenya Defence Forces personnel, reviving key youth funds such as Uwezo and the Youth Enterprise Fund, creating 500,000 contract jobs for teachers and in public works, and reversing Duale’s amendments to restore student union elections.
Final Appeal to Ruto
“Act Now or Kenya Plunges Deeper” The NAA warned that without decisive leadership, Kenya risks full-blown chaos.
“Your Excellency, this moment demands courage,” the statement concluded. “The future of our nation hangs in the balance.”
As tensions escalate, all eyes are on State House, will Ruto heed the call, or will Kenya’s crisis deepen?
The nation is grappling with its worst unrest in decades, driven by a frustrated Gen-Z that is demanding change, while the government’s heavy-handed response to the protests has drawn global condemnation.
The situation has sparked widespread concern and debate, making hashtags like #KenyaBurning, #SabaSaba25, and #NAADemandsAction trending as citizens rally for action.
