National Police Service Promotes 132 Senior Officers, Introduces Digital Recruitment to Curb Corruption

By Eddah Waithaka

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has promoted at least 132 senior police officers to higher ranks following successful interviews this week.

The ongoing interviews, which began on Tuesday and will conclude on Thursday, will elevate officers from Chief Inspector to Assistant Superintendent of Police.

NPSC Chief Executive Officer Peter Leley confirmed that the promoted officers completed mandatory training at Kiganjo and Emali police colleges.

In a move to combat bribery and corruption during recruitment, the commission announced plans to adopt a digital recruitment system.

Prospective candidates will now submit their credentials through online platforms, minimizing physical interactions. Leley stated that the NPSC will announce recruitment dates only after Parliament approves the necessary budget.

The new system will restrict in-person engagements to shortlisted candidates, who will undergo physical vetting and final procedures.

Scheduled for rollout this year, the digital platform will streamline the entire recruitment process, from applications and shortlisting to assessments, selection, and appointment.

The system promises real-time data validation, improved accountability, and greater efficiency.

Edwin Cheluget, the Commission’s acting Chairperson, explained that the shift aims to address flaws in the manual recruitment system, which relies on physical applications, in-person assessments, and paper records.

“For decades, the manual process has caused logistical inefficiencies, data errors, delays, and vulnerabilities to malpractice like nepotism and corruption,” Cheluget said.

“These issues have driven up administrative costs and eroded public trust in police recruitment.”

The new digital approach, he added, will enhance transparency and restore confidence in the hiring process.
