Safaricom has announced a KES 25.8 million sponsorship for this year’s Rhino Charge, set for 31st May in Baringo County, a major increase from last year’s KES 15 million.
The telecom giant will support Car No. 44 (AK44), led by Safaricom Chairman Adil Khawaja and the EV Explorers, marking the first-ever electric vehicle entry in the event’s history.
Beyond funding, Safaricom will provide connectivity solutions and an experiential setup to enhance the off-road challenge, ensuring seamless communication and showcasing tech innovation in rugged environments.

Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa said, “Rhino Charge aligns with our sustainability goals. As we celebrate 25 years of impact, we are doubling our support and using technology to elevate the event experience.”
This year’s 36th edition will feature 65 teams, including past champions like Car No. 5 (Graham McKittrick) and Car No. 4 (Mark Glen).
Last year’s event raised a record KES 325.8 million, with Car No. 44 (Safaricom-backed) as the top fundraiser at KES 175 million.
Christian Lambrechts, Rhino Ark Executive Director, praised Safaricom’s long-term commitment, noting their contributions have helped protect key ecosystems like Mt. Kenya and Aberdare forests.
To date, Safaricom has invested KES 586 million in conservation, including tree planting, wildlife conflict mitigation, and renewable energy projects.
Over the past decade, its Rhino Charge support has helped raise KES 2.4 billion for environmental causes. This year’s event aims to surpass previous records, further safeguarding Kenya’s natural heritage.
