The 2025 Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) celebrated outstanding African storytelling, and Showmax Originals dominated the awards, securing multiple wins. The prestigious festival, held from 25th to 29th June, recognized the platform’s commitment to bold, authentic narratives.
Subterranea Takes Top Honors
Sci-fi thriller Subterranea clinched Best TV Drama Series in East Africa, triumphing over strong competitors like Single Kiasi Season 3 and The Chocolate Empire. Director Likarion Wainaina and writer Brian Munene crafted a gripping tale of eight strangers trapped in a psychological experiment inside an underground bunker.
Producer Brian Munene celebrated the win, saying, “This award reflects the passion and hard work of our entire team. We pushed boundaries with Subterranea, and this recognition at ZIFF proves African audiences crave daring, original stories.”
Jimmy Gathu Wins for The Chocolate Empire
Veteran actor Jimmy Gathu earned acclaim for his role as JB Mauzo, a fallen tycoon rebuilding his empire while secretly running an elite escort service. His layered performance captivated audiences and critics alike.
Grace Kahaki, the show’s director and producer, praised Gathu, “Jimmy brought depth and intensity to JB Mauzo. This win isn’t just his, it’s a victory for our entire team and Nairobi’s vibrant storytelling scene.”
Tanzania’s Jacob’s Daughters Secures Best Actor Award
Tanzanian Showmax Original Jacob’s Daughters added to the night’s success, with Kojack Chillo winning Best Actor in a Drama Series – Tanzania. The recognition highlighted the growing influence of East African talent in the global entertainment industry.
Nzola Miranda, Managing Director at MultiChoice Kenya, emphasized the significance of the wins, “ZIFF’s recognition of both a series and a lead actor proves East Africa’s creative industry is thriving. Showmax remains dedicated to elevating African voices and delivering world-class content.”
Since 1997, the Zanzibar International Film Festival has championed global cinema, fostering cultural exchange and celebrating groundbreaking filmmaking.
This year’s awards reinforced Showmax’s position as a leader in African storytelling, with its originals making waves across the continent.
