Student Leaders Celebrate Raila Odinga’s Bid for AU Chairmanship

By Eddah Waithaka

Student leaders in the Lake Side Caucus, representing universities across Kenya, warmly congratulate the Right Honorable Baba Raila Amolo Odinga for his commendable pursuit of the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.

Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi, Ramesh Saxena, Secretary General of UON, expressed his admiration by saying, “Your steadfast commitment to social, political, and economic transformation for our people is indelibly etched in our Kenyan and African history. We welcome you back home and cherish our bond with you now and for generations to come.”

From (L-R) Ramesh Saxena, Secretary General of UON and Zadock Nyakwaka, Secretary General of KU during the press conference at Beirut Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

“As budding scholars and leaders of our generation, we closely followed the issues presented by various nations and candidates. We recognize that multiple complex external factors influenced the outcome of the AUC election, and it did not rely solely on Kenya’s exemplary efforts. Therefore, we join His Excellency President Ruto and the Right Honorable Raila Odinga in congratulating the winning candidate and reaffirming our commitment to supporting the African Union’s mission of unity, peace, and prosperity for the continent,” Saxena stated.

Zadock Nyakwaka, Secretary General of KU, also praised His Excellency President Dr. William Samoei Ruto for his unwavering support of Baba’s candidacy. “Once Baba entered the race, President Ruto mobilized government resources, starting with his own efforts and those of his office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Security Agencies, and the Kenyan Intelligence Community. The Kenyan diplomatic stations abroad worked effectively, leading to victory in the first four rounds.”

“Indeed, we take pride in Kenya’s significant impact on the African Union and our commitment to furthering that remarkable effort. His Excellency President William Ruto has actively traversed the continent, highlighting Kenya’s potential and the leadership that Raila Odinga represents. This effort resonates deeply with Aristotle’s words: ‘Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.’ Your Excellency, we commend your dedication to both the Kenyan people and the African continent,” Nyakwaka stated as he read the statement.

Additionally, the caucus leaders emphasized the importance of involving university students in the African Union’s efforts for the next generation of African leaders. They believe that creating mechanisms for this involvement will cultivate Pan-Africanism at the grassroots level and empower young Africans to make meaningful contributions to the continent’s development.

The Student leaders therefore propose transformative initiatives to empower Africa’s youth and strengthen continental unity. They call for the establishment of Student Shadowing Programs at the AU, allowing students to gain firsthand experience in governance and Pan-African ideals.

Additionally, they advocate for creating Pan-African University Forums and Digital Repositories to preserve Africa’s history and foster intellectual exchange. They also support the establishment of AU Centers for Democracy and Governance in universities to promote research and advocacy on democratic reforms. These proposals aim to nurture a new generation of leaders committed to Africa’s progress.

The Lake Side Caucus seeks collaboration with leaders like President William Ruto and Raila Odinga to escalate these ideas to the African Union for implementation.

Further, the leaders declared their commitment to advancing the ideals of Pan-Africanism and ensuring that young people’s voices resonate within the corridors of power.
