UDA Holds Repeat Grassroots Elections in 18 Counties, Attracts Over 500,000 Candidates

By Eddah Waithaka

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has successfully conducted repeat grassroots elections across 18 counties, with party members selecting representatives in approximately 9,000 polling stations.

More than 500,000 candidates vied for various party positions at the polling station level, demonstrating strong grassroots engagement in the exercise.

Deputy party leader and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki commended the process, stating that the elections remained largely free and fair despite minor technical challenges reported in some counties.

He emphasized that robust grassroots structures form the foundation of a strong political party.

“The party is stronger if it is strong at the grassroots. When those who speak on behalf of the people are elected by party members, then you have a strong party,” Kindiki said.

However, the exercise faced some hitches in Githunguri Constituency, Kiambu County, where several aspirants complained that their names did not appear on the candidates’ list.

Voter turnout remained high in other regions, including Kericho and Samburu counties, where hundreds of members turned out to cast their ballots for preferred candidates.

With the polling station elections now complete, UDA plans to conduct ward-level elections next month. The party continues to strengthen its grassroots leadership structures as it builds momentum ahead of the 2027 general election.
