World Vision Kenya Hosts Successful “Less Steps for Water Run” to Tackle Water Scarcity in Salgaa

By Eddah Waithaka

On Saturday, World Vision Kenya (WVK), through the Inuka Angaza Fund, hosted the ‘Less Steps for Water Run’ at its National Office in Karen, Nairobi.

The event brought together colleagues, partners, families, children, and supporters to address water scarcity in Salgaa, Nakuru County.

The initiative aims to expand clean water access to six schools, improving health, education, and overall well-being for children in the region.

For many children in Salgaa, the daily struggle to fetch water has long disrupted their lives. Walking up to six kilometers daily often forces them to miss school, while exposure to waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, diarrhea, and typhoid jeopardizes their health.

Since June 2021, WVK, through the Inuka Angaza Fund, has worked to change this reality by implementing sustainable solutions to combat poverty and water insecurity.

The impact of these efforts is already visible. Strategic partnerships with Nakuru County, KenGen, World Vision Kenya staff, corporate partners, and generous donors have achieved significant milestones, including:- Providing clean water to 695 children at Mimwaita and Gicheha Primary Schools, allowing them to focus on education instead of fetching water.

Installing two 30,000-liter rainwater harvesting tanks to ensure a reliable water supply.- Expanding the Umoja Water Project, which now provides safe drinking water to over 2,000 people within a 30-minute round trip, reducing reliance on unsafe water sources.

Gilbert Kamanga, National Director of World Vision Kenya, emphasized the transformative impact of these initiatives.

“These efforts have significantly improved hygiene, health, and learning conditions, enabling children to focus on their education in a safer environment. The success of the ‘Less Steps for Water Run’ is not just about fundraising—it is about changing lives,” he said.

He added that funds raised from the event will extend clean water access to six additional schools, ensuring more children in Salgaa no longer have to walk long distances for water.

Beyond schools, the Umoja Water Project, developed in partnership with the Nakuru County Government, has transformed water accessibility for the broader community.

The project has provided 2,079 people with access to improved drinking water sources within a 30-minute round trip, reducing reliance on unsafe water and lowering the prevalence of waterborne illnesses.

“Our key achievements highlight our commitment to improving community access to clean water. We successfully provided clean water to Kayanet Primary School and Umoja ECD, directly benefiting 390 children. Additionally, we established a modern automated water kiosk at the borehole site, enhancing accessibility to safe drinking water. With the support of the Nakuru County Government, we also expanded an 8km pipeline distribution network, connecting homes, schools, and early childhood development centers, further ensuring that clean water reaches those who need it most,” read the statement released on Saturday.

As part of its long-term commitment to sustainable development, WVK, through the Inuka Angaza Fund, is constructing a Community Resource Centre at Belbur Primary School.

The center will feature computers and a library to promote digital literacy while serving as a safe space for adolescents, youth, and women to access life skills training, mentorship, and counseling services.

Dr. David Githanga, Board Chair of World Vision Kenya, expressed gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and partners. “Your support is making it possible for more children in Salgaa to access safe water, quality education, and a healthier future. Together, we have taken fewer steps for water, so the children of Salgaa can too,” he said.

The ‘Less Steps for Water Run’ marks another step forward in WVK’s mission to create lasting change in Salgaa, ensuring a brighter future for its children and communities.
