Gusii Leaders Condemn Heckling of Raila incident at Gusii Stadium

By Eddah Waithaka

Leaders from the Gusii community have strongly condemned the heckling incident that occurred on Sunday, March 9, 2025, during a football event at Gusii Stadium, attended by His Excellency the Right Honourable Raila Odinga.

In a joint press statement, the leaders described the incident as “unfortunate” and blamed it on intolerant politicians who they claim do not have the best interests of the Gusii people at heart.

The leaders from different political affiliations unanimously supported Raila Odinga and his efforts to join a broad-based government. They urged the Gusii community to stay committed to the ODM party, highlighting Raila Odinga’s steadfast support for Sabana FC and the wider Gusii community.

“We, the leaders of the Omugusi community, condemn in the strongest terms the heckling witnessed at Gusi Stadium,” George Morarabuga, Majority Leader of the Middle Country Assembly, stated, “Individuals who do not represent the values of our community orchestrated an unfortunate act.”

“We reaffirm our support for His Excellency Raila Odinga and the unity he represents.”Honourable Atutu Nyameno, Minority Leader of the Nyamena County Assembly, echoed these sentiments, stating, “We are in a historic moment of unity under the leadership of His Excellency President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Those who seek to disrupt this unity will face the full force of our resolve.”

The leaders also addressed recent political tensions, dismissing claims that the Gusii community is pushing for one of their own to run for the presidency. They clarified that such narratives misrepresent the community’s stance.

Instead, they stressed the importance of implementing the NADCO report, which provides a government framework backed by most Kenyans.

“What happened at Gusi Stadium was a misguided effort by a few individuals to sow division,” said one leader. “We apologize to His Excellency Raila Odinga and reiterate our commitment to peace and unity. The broad-based government must work, and we will not tolerate any attempts to derail this process.”

“Raila Odinga means Kenya,” declared one leader.

The leaders also highlighted Raila Odinga’s contributions to Kenya, describing him as a symbol of justice, equity, and transparency. They praised his sacrifices for the nation and called on all Kenyans to support the ongoing efforts to foster unity and stability.

“His decisions have shaped this country for the better, and we stand firmly behind him. We urge our community and all Kenyans to remain calm and focused on building a united nation.”

The leaders vowed to deal decisively with anyone who seeks to undermine the progress being made.
