The Showmax Original Untying Kantai dominated the 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs), clinching the Best Writing TV Series award and solidifying East Africa’s rising influence in African storytelling.
The prestigious ceremony, hosted at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, celebrated the continent’s finest film and television talent, with Untying Kantai earning recognition for its compelling narrative, stellar performances, and high production value.
Phillip Karanja, director and co-founder of Phil It Productions, expressed his excitement, “Winning Best Scripted TV Show for Untying Kantai humbles and excites me. As a director, I take immense pride in the dedication of our cast and crew, who poured their passion into every scene.”

The 13-episode dramedy follows Kantai (Benson Ojuwa), a man who plunges into a risky, illegal venture, navigating a treacherous world of crime and betrayal.
The series boasts a powerhouse cast, including Pascal Tokodi (Selina), Blessing Lung’aho (Bwana Chairman), Silayio (Nafsi), Sanchez Ombasa (Faithless), and Mary Mwikali (Second Family).
Adding to their triumph, Phil It Productions also secured Best Indigenous Language Film (East Africa) for Makosa Ni Yangu (2024).
Meanwhile, Showmax’s Kenyan sci-fi thriller Subterranea earned a nomination in the Best Indigenous M-Net Original category for Brian Munene and Likarion Wainaina.
Since its inception in 2013, the AMVCAs have spotlighted Africa’s brightest talents and this year, Kenya took center stage.
