The Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI) has unveiled the latest exhibition by renowned Ugandan artist Xenson (Samson Ssenkaaba) entitled ‘Olidde Mupipa’.

Ollide Mupipa is derived from the Luganda phrase meaning ‘you have eaten from the barrel’, explores the significance of objects like steel drums and charcoal-burning stoves in East African contexts.
Xenson’s transformative approach highlights the cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic layers embedded within these items.
Kelvis Wanjia, Communications Associate NCAI, highlighted Mupipa’s transformative use of discarded materials while emphasizing on the artist’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
In a speech on the NCAI’s mission, Wanjia outlined the institute’s commitment to the promotion and preservation of art in East Africa.

“The main purpose of Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute… is to promote and preserve art in East Africa,” stated Wanjia. Emphasizing accessibility, Wanjia noted, “All our programs are free. We are a nonprofit organization, so you can just come in, look at the artwork.”
