Record 2,078 HR Professionals Sit for National Certification Exams as CHRP Gains Momentum

By Eddah Waithaka

A record 2,078 human resource professionals across Kenya began their Certified Human Resource Professionals (CHRP), CBET, and Diploma examinations today, marking a significant milestone for the profession as the government-mandated certification gains unprecedented traction nationwide.

The Human Resource Management Professionals Examinations Board (HRMPEB) kicked off the August 2026 examination series at 22 centers across the country, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Thika, Kisumu, Eldoret, Kakamega, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Bomet, and extending to Rwanda . The exams will run through August 12, 2026.

Certification Now Mandatory for Public Service

The government has declared CHRP certification a mandatory prerequisite for hiring and career progression within the public service, covering State Departments, Ministries, Constitutional Commissions, and State Corporations .

This directive has fueled the exponential growth in candidate registrations, with the current examination series attracting the highest numbers in the board’s history.

“CHRP certification has become the foremost qualification for any aspiring Human Resource practitioner within the country,” said HRMPEB CEO CHRP Margaret Nguu MIHRM. “We are working in tandem with the Institute for Human Resource Management (IHRM) to continuously re-evaluate the coursework, tailoring the curriculum to fit the modern workplace in both the public and private sectors” .

Digital Reforms Drive Enrollment Surge

The board’s new student portal, launched in late 2023, has revolutionized the candidate experience, making registration and exam booking more accessible . The user-centric digital platform has become integral to the immense growth witnessed over the past three academic years.

“Users can easily navigate through it independently, it is a completely student-centric online digital platform,” Nguu explained.

The board has also increased examination cycles from two to three per year April, August, and December accommodating the ever-increasing number of candidates .

TVET Institutions Key to Expansion

National polytechnics have gradually become key centers for HRMPEB CBET and Diploma examinations . Institutions including Kabete National Polytechnic, Eldoret National Polytechnic, Sigalagala National Polytechnic, and The Kenya Coast National Polytechnic have partnered with HRMPEB, extending the board’s reach across the country.

“The enthusiasm shown by TVET institutions in incorporating HRMPEB’s diploma and CBET courses within their academic framework partly explains the exponential increase in enrolment,” Nguu noted .

Industry Relevance in AI Era

Beyond the government directive, HR professionals are increasingly self-motivated to pursue CHRP certification to stay relevant amid shifting workplace trends, including AI proliferation and generational transitions within the office space .

“The CHRP exam is a true evaluation of how far candidates have managed to transform and conform to new and innovative practices within the Human Resource Management sphere,” Nguu stated. “We encourage all HR professionals to enroll without fear of being locked out, so long as their qualifications are verifiable.”

The board continues to implement Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathways, allowing professionals with over 15 years of experience to qualify based on competence and documented evidence rather than traditional academic routes .

HRMPEB remains the sole administrator of Human Resource Management examinations in Kenya, operating under the Ministry of Public Service and Human Capital Development . The board is currently undertaking a joint sensitization program with the State Department for Human Capital Development to encourage government-based HR professionals to undertake the coursework and complete all three examination series leading to certification.
