40 Teams Set to Compete at the M-PESA Jr. NBA Tournament Showdown

By Eddah Waithaka

This weekend, Uasin Gishu High School in the Rift Valley will host the next thrilling chapter of the M-PESA Jr. NBA tournament, as 40 teams of boys and girls compete for the regional championship.

The winners will walk away with smartphones and airtime, while top players will earn a spot at an elite basketball development camp.

A total of 480 young athletes will hit the court in a series of intense 5-on-5 games, showcasing their skills and determination to claim the coveted title.

The tournament, which has already seen success in Nairobi and the Coast regions, continues to empower young Kenyans both on and off the court.

Ahead of the games, Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa emphasized the program’s dual focus on sports and financial literacy.

“This weekend, we expect to empower over 400 young people from the Rift Valley region by equipping them with essential financial literacy skills,” he said.

“Our visits to Nairobi and the Coast have been a great success, and I believe programs like these are crucial for young people from an early age. This initiative is about building champions both on and off the court, nurturing sporting talent while preparing the next generation for financial independence.”

The Rift Valley Regional Finals follow last week’s Coast Regional Finals, where Aga Khan Academy and Umoja Junior School from Changamwe emerged victorious.

In the Nairobi regionals, held two weeks ago, St. John’s Junior School from Korogocho and Olympic Junior School claimed top honors.

This weekend’s winners in both the boys’ and girls’ categories will receive smartphones and airtime courtesy of Safaricom’s M-PESA.

Additionally, standout players will be scouted to attend the prestigious Top 100 elite basketball development camp in April.

The M-PESA Jr. NBA program aims to provide basketball development and financial literacy training to more than 10,000 boys and girls across Kenya. After Eldoret, the tournament will head to Kisumu next weekend.

The regional tournaments will culminate in a national championship, held in collaboration with the National Secondary School games, as the program continues to inspire and develop Kenya’s next generation of basketball stars and financially savvy youth.
