Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims that he is being lured to President William Ruto’s side, insisting his recent meeting with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was strictly official.
Murkomen visited Trans Nzoia on July 28 to lead the Jukwaa La Usalama security forum, accompanied by senior security officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli. The CS later held talks with Natembeya at the governor’s office.
Natembeya clarified that their discussions focused on local challenges, including land grabbing and security.
“We agreed on the need for stronger collaboration between national and county governments to tackle these issues and promote peace and development,” he said.
However, the meeting fueled speculation that Murkomen was on a political mission to woo the governor to Ruto’s camp.
Natembeya dismissed the claims, stating that hosting national officials was part of his duty.
“This was purely a protocol meeting, not about politics,” he said. When pressed on whether he would defect from the opposition, Natembeya remained firm.
“I will not compromise my principles for power. I know the cost of speaking truth to those in authority, and I’m ready to face it with dignity,” he said.
He also denied rumors that he was angling for a Cabinet position, emphasizing his commitment to serving as governor.
“I have a clear mandate from the people. A CS post means nothing to me,” he said. The governor’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions, with opposition figures facing pressure to align with the government.
Natembeya’s defiance signals his intent to remain independent, even as speculation swirls around his next move.
