‘We want fans to get to the stadium reliably’: Uber slashes ride costs by 70% for major sporting events

By Eddah Waithaka

Uber slashes ride fares by 70 percent as thousands of rugby and golf fans prepare to flood Nairobi for two major international sporting events.

The ride-hailing giant launches the promotional blitz to help spectators navigate the expected travel chaos during the HSBC SVNS tournament and the Magical Kenya Open over the coming weeks.

Thousands of local and international rugby fans will descend on Nyayo National Stadium for the HSBC SVNS, creating concentrated travel demand along routes connecting residential areas, hospitality zones, and the stadium precinct.

The Magical Kenya Open will then pull in spectators, players, and officials across airport routes, hotels, and event venues.

“Kenya continues to host world-class sporting events that bring together fans, visitors, and local communities,” said Imran Manji, General Manager, Head of East Africa, Uber.

“Large-scale events like HSBC SVNS bring incredible energy to Nairobi and also create unique mobility needs across the city.”

The promotion offers 70 percent off the first five trips, with each discount capped at KES 400, available across all Uber products. New riders simply use the code: KENYAy4e92i1.

Existing riders attending the rugby sevens also received a dedicated event promotion through direct rider communications, offering discounted rides during the tournament period using the code RUGBY7SKE.

Uber positions the initiative as a dual-purpose move: helping fans reach venues reliably and affordably while enabling drivers to cash in on surging demand during high-footfall weekends.

As Kenya strengthens its reputation as a global sporting and tourism destination, seamless mobility shapes visitor experience and supports the broader events ecosystem.

The promotion runs through the end of May, covering both tournaments.Uber advises fans to plan trips in advance, use designated pick-up and drop-off zones, and check the app for real-time updates during peak movement periods.
