‘We carry our continent with us’: Africa Day celebrations ignite as SuperSport honours continent’s sporting giants

By Eddah Waithaka

From marathon history to UFC glory, African athletes deliver record-breaking performances that reshape the global sporting landscape

Sebastian Sawe shatters the two-hour marathon barrier. Julius Yego hurls his javelin to a sixth consecutive continental gold. Collen Busang Kebinatshipi blazes to a stunning 9.89-second 100m.

African sport has never roared louder

A record ten African teams now qualify for this year’s FIFA World Cup. The continent’s athletes no longer chase greatness—they redefine it. And this Africa Day, SuperSport answers with a blockbuster programming lineup celebrating the sheer brilliance emerging from African soil.

“To me, being African means being born and raised in Africa—a resilient character shaped by vast African culture,” legendary Kenyan javelin thrower Julius Yego, known as the “YouTube Man,” told SuperSport. “I love being the dark African, a strong human being.”

Yego’s historic sixth consecutive gold at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Accra this year adds another spectacular peak to a career he calls “an incredible journey with lots of successes and highs, but also compounded with near misses and disappointments of injuries.”

His mission now transcends medals. “No matter where we are born, that can’t shape our futures,” Yego said. “Dedication to training and determination will take you far.”

East African dominance

Rwanda’s Emeline Imanizabayo delivered one of the year’s most breathtaking surprises, snatching a shock 5,000m gold against heavily favoured fields at the African Senior Championships.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe made history in London, becoming the first human ever to complete an official marathon under two hours with an astounding 1:59:30.

Botswana’s Kebinatshipi now joins an elite global fraternity, athletes capable of running sub-44 seconds in the 400m and sub-10 seconds in the 100m.

South Africa’s spectacular year

Mamelodi Sundowns capped a fantastic season last night, winning their second CAF Champions League crown. Orlando Pirates also made waves, securing the domestic treble and ending their 14-year league drought.

Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt earned Player of the Series honours with an unbelievable batting average of 82.50 during the recent T20 International series against India.

The nation wept with joy as Luvo Manyonga returned from adversity to capture the national long jump title before soaring to gold at the African Senior Championships. Akani Simbine currently holds the fastest 100m time globally this year at a blistering 9.90 seconds.

‘Resilience and warmth in the same heart’

Twenty-one-year-old boxing prodigy Tyla Promnick captured the South African mini-flyweight title and now carries her continent into every fight.

“Winning the SA mini-flyweight title was bigger than just me,” Promnick said. “Every time I step into the ring, I carry my family, my team, my country, and my continent with me.”

She attributes her fierce drive to Africa’s unbreakable spirit. “To represent Africa means representing resilience. Africans have always had to fight harder, dream bigger, and prove ourselves over and over again.”

Cameroon’s Ateba Gautier, nicknamed “The Storm,” secured a dominant UFC victory to cement his status as a terrifying new contender.

SuperSport’s Africa Day spectacle

Cyclist Alan Hatherly rounded out the nation’s pride by winning South African Sportsman of the Year following his gritty Olympic bronze medal performance in Paris.
