Mwaura says Government is Backing Raila Odinga’s AUC Bid with Financial Support

By Eddah Waithaka

On Monday, December 23, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced that the government is providing financial support for the campaign of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is seeking the position of chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

During a media briefing, Mwaura stated that the government had allocated a moderate amount of money for the campaigns. He addressed concerns regarding the potential misuse of public funds, assuring that further updates on the expenditures would be provided in the future.

Nonetheless, he emphasized that Raila has a strong and respected background, which helps alleviate concerns about the campaign budget. “This is a matter that will be discussed in detail soon enough. Right now we can assure Kenyans that we are not using a lot of money for the campaigns of Raila,” said Mwaura.

“One, we have a candidate who is respected and is experienced enough in Africa. Remember he was in charge of infrastructure at AU. He is well known and you can see that from the debate. Therefore, we do not need to spend a lot of money on the campaigns,” he added.

Raila is targeting the position of chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), with elections scheduled for February 2025. His candidacy is backed by the Kenya Kwanza government. In preparation for the elections, Raila has been actively visiting various countries across the continent to garner support from Presidents. In December alone, he traveled to Eritrea, Morocco, Chad, and the Central African Republic.

In addition, the Government Spokesperson noted that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has employed over 85,000 teachers at a cost of more than KSh 40 billion. This initiative has significantly reduced the   teacher-to-student ratio, enhanced the quality of education, and addressed teacher shortages across the country.

Further, he added that the Government is committed to navigating them with courage, determination, and ambition.

“We urge all Kenyans to remain optimistic and actively participate in shaping our nation’s future, for we reaffirm that the government is on course towards fulfilling the promises it made to Kenyans.”
