The Nairobi Hospital’s Pediatric Cardiology Golf Tournament has exceeded its KSh 10 million target, raising KSh 11.1 million to fund life-saving heart surgeries for underprivileged children.
Held at the Karen Country Club under the theme “Giving Little Hearts Big Dreams,” the event united golfers, medical professionals, and corporate sponsors to advance accessible cardiac care for Kenya’s children.
Transforming Lives Through Equity
Mr. Samuel Odede, Director of Medical Services and Research at Nairobi Hospital, hailed the achievement, “These funds will give hope to children who need complex surgeries but lack financial means. Through public-private partnerships, we are leveling the healthcare playing field.”
CEO Felix Osano highlighted the growth, “Last year, we raised KSh 4.8 million. This year’s KSh 11.1 million shows our community’s unwavering commitment to saving young lives.”
Confronting Kenya’s Pediatric Heart Crisis
Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects 1 in 100 newborns nationally, yet fewer than 150 open-heart surgeries are performed annually due to cost barriers and a shortage of specialists.
A single surgery can cost up to KSh 2.5 million far beyond most families’ reach. Margaret Muyoro, Director of Nursing Services, shared a triumph, “An 8-year-old from Marsabit received life-saving surgery here after being referred to India. Now, he’s thriving in school proof that local solutions work.”
Corporate Champions Fuel Success
The record-breaking tally reflects partnerships with insurers, pharma firms, and health advocates.
Dr. Barclay Onyambu, Board Chairperson, stressed alignment with Kenya’s universal healthcare agenda, “Every child deserves quality care, regardless of background.”
Tournament Highlights
Winners like Park Seoyon (Overall Champion) and Daniel Cherono (Top Male Golfer) celebrated alongside medical staff.
