The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition is deeply concerned about the serious disruptions that the heavy rains continue to cause in the country.
Over the past few days, the country has experienced heavy rains with widespread destructive flooding to our dear citizens, materials, economy and environment. The floods have affected most parts of the country.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday 8 May, Azimio co-director Kalonzo Musyoka stressed that declaring the floods a national disaster would trigger the necessary response for Kenya.
“We are aware that such a declaration automatically triggers expenditure from the country’s contingency fund. Is it possible that there is no money in the contingency fund? And if not, who has spent the money and on what? Kenyans want to know,” Kalonzo asked.

Azimio also took the Kenyawanza government to task for ignoring the scientists towards the end of last year. They demanded a minimum contribution of Sh100,000 per household for flood relief, saying the previous offer of Sh10,000 per family was insufficient.
In addition, 150 schools were directly affected, residential buildings collapsed and farms were flooded.
In response to the current doctors’ strike, Azimio has warned that it will rally other unions and the public to strike if the government does not resolve the health crisis.
“We note with concern that Kenya’s Kwanza regime has moved swiftly to provide no support to the families of the deceased soldiers. They have also failed to establish a timely public inquiry into the cause of the helicopter crash.”
The coalition has also called for a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate the untimely death of the late Chief of Defence Staff, General Francis Ogolla.
“We note with concern that the Kenya Kwanza regime has swiftly moved on, leaving the families of the departed soldiers with no assistance. They have also failed to establish a time-bound public inquiry into the cause of the chopper crash.”
Azimio leaders have stated that the internal investigation conducted by the Kenya Air Force falls short of being an open, transparent, independent and credible investigation.
