Technical University of Kenya (TUK) lecturers and staff have officially initiated their strike following the expiration of a seven-day notice period. The strike was prompted by the expiration of a seven-day notice period during which the workers appealed to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi to address their concerns.
The faculty members report that they have directly informed Parliament, the Treasury, and the Ministry of Education about their grievances, yet these authorities have consistently disregarded their concerns.
Among their complaints are the lack of salary payments since September and the claimed inability of the institution to remit mandatory deductions, such as contributions to NHIF, NSSF, and SACCO.

UASU Organizing Secretary Onesmas Muluki said, the government has failed to honor the agreement signed last year, including the payment of salaries for November and December for certain lecturers.
“We agreed that the new salaries for university lecturers would be implemented in December and that we would also receive arrears for October and November. We saw a circular from the PS directing the universities to prepare to pay the new salaries in December. But again, we went for Christmas without the new salary as was expected,” said Muluki.
Furthermore, there are reports of a loss of pension funds amounting to Ksh. 5 billion, among other concerns. They have pledged to persist with the strike until all their demands are met and the agreed-upon Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is finalized.
