On Tuesday, officials inaugurated a 42-member task force dedicated to addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
Former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza will lead the team charged with evaluating current issues and proposing strategies to tackle the rising incidents of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide in Kenya.
On January 10, President William Ruto established the task force featuring prominent members like Ann Ireri, Sam Thenya, James Nombi, Michael Kariuki, Faith Odhiambo, Linda Musumba, and Seth Masese, among others.
This group will report to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and anticipates submitting its findings and recommendations to the President within a 90-day period.

This initiative comes in response to a significant rise in gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide incidents throughout the country. Last year, authorities documented at least 97 femicide cases and reported nearly 4,000 gender-based violence (GBV) cases each month.
In the Gazette Notice that established the task force, President Ruto emphasized the critical need to tackle this issue, remarking: “The increase in GBV and femicide cases causes profound emotional and physical damage to individuals and communities, exacerbating existing gender inequalities.”
The task force is tasked with enhancing institutional, legal, and policy frameworks aimed at preventing gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide. Its goals include improving investigation and prosecution procedures, as well as providing comprehensive support for survivors.
President Ruto voiced his belief that the work of this team will help to close the gaps in tackling these violations and foster a safer, more equitable society.
