In a recent engagement at the Africa AI Convening, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo emphasized the need for improved utilization of digital platforms amid growing concerns about their impact on Kenyan society.

Speaking at the event organized by the Office of the Special Envoy on Technology, led by Philip Thigo, Omollo acknowledged the mixed reactions from leaders regarding the ways in which citizens, particularly the youth, engage with these technologies.

His remarks underscored a push for more responsible and innovative use of digital tools to enhance societal benefit while addressing the challenges posed by their misuse.

“Kenya is at the forefront of Africa’s technology revolution, and we recognize that while digital platforms create opportunities, they must also be used responsibly,” Omollo made the remarks in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

The Principal Secretary also shared insights on the significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in today’s world, highlighting its potential to drive innovation and improve various sectors.“In an age of widespread misinformation, disinformation, and manipulated media, it is fundamental to ensure that Artificial Intelligence (AI) development and deployment in the country are safe, secure, and trustworthy,” he added.

The PS also emphasized that technology touches every aspect of our daily lives. “The emergence of generative AI brings with it both remarkable opportunities and serious challenges. New security threats are pushing the limits of our current governance structures. Regulatory frameworks, while designed with good intentions, fall short in addressing the complexities presented by these technologies.”

Therefore, he emphasized that the potential of AI to disrupt essential infrastructure, pose risks to national security, and undermine current standards must not be overlooked.

“The AI principles put forth at this forum are a crucial milestone in creating a solid framework for leveraging AI effectively in Kenya and across the African continent. These principles—centered around Safety, Security, Inclusivity, and Sustainability—are more than mere ideals; they represent tangible commitments to the responsible development and implementation of AI,” said the PS.
