Senator Hezena Calls for Action as Increased Gang Attacks Plunge Samburu County into Crisis

Samburu County is grappling with a surge in violent gang attacks, as criminal groups masquerading as bandits terrorize residents and businesses.

In response, Nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian has urgently called on the Ministry of Interior to intervene and restore peace and stability across the region.

Speaking during a press briefing today, Nominated Senator Lemaletian demanded that the government provide a detailed update on the progress of investigations into the recent wave of criminal incidents.

She emphasized the need for transparency regarding arrests made and suspects arraigned in court. The Senator also urged the government to deploy additional security personnel and allocate adequate resources to combat the escalating violence.

She stressed the importance of long-term solutions to address the rising cases of robberies, business attacks, and other criminal activities. Furthermore, she called for enhanced coordination between security agencies and local communities to improve crime prevention and intelligence gathering.

Senator Lemaletian Seeks Accountability in Parliament

In a formal request to the Senate, Nominated Senator Lemaletian sought a statement from the Standing Committee on National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations regarding the rampant insecurity in Wamba, Kisima, and Maralal towns.

Citing Standing Order 53(1), she highlighted the alarming increase in violent crimes perpetrated by gangs posing as bandits.Senator Lemaletian recounted several harrowing incidents that have left residents living in fear.

In January 2025, attackers robbed the Lake Oil petrol station along the Kisima-Maralal road, injuring a night guard and assaulting staff. On February 25, 2025, armed thugs violently robbed a shop in Kisima Town, firing gunshots that endangered civilians.

Most recently, on March 9, 2025, a businessman in Wamba Town was brutally killed, and his two sons were critically injured, leaving the community in shock.

The Senator expressed deep concern over the understaffing of police officers in Samburu County, which has left urban centers vulnerable to attacks.

She condemned the situation, noting that businesses are shutting down and residents are forced to live in constant fear due to inadequate security measures.

Senator Lemaletian’s impassioned plea underscores the urgent need for action to address the security crisis in Samburu County.

Residents and business owners await decisive measures from the government to end the reign of terror and restore peace to the region.
