The Muslim World League has paid $1 million in blood money to secure the release of Stephen Munyakho, a Kenyan man facing execution in Saudi Arabia for a 13-year-old manslaughter conviction.
In a press statement issued by the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), today. The statement revealed that Hassan Omar Hassan, Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), confirmed the payment during an Iftar dinner hosted by President William Ruto at State House Nairobi on Tuesday.

He revealed that the Muslim World League, of which the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) is a member, settled the compensation a month ago.

During a high-level meeting in Nairobi on August 13, 2024, SUPKEM leaders presented the matter to Dr. Mohammed Abdul Karim Alissa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League, who intervened to halt the execution.
“The League determined that Stephen did not intend to kill the victim, as they were friends before a tragic altercation led to the death,” Hassan said.
“They deemed him worthy of intervention and approved the payment.” Authorities in Saudi Arabia have now received the funds, and administrative processes are underway to release Munyakho.
Hassan confirmed coordination with Saudi and Kenyan diplomats, including Ambassador Khalid Alsalman and Kenya’s envoys, H.E. Peter Ogego and H.E. Mohamed Ramadhan Ruwange.
Hassan praised Kweyu for her relentless efforts, the Muslim World League for its swift action, and Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Ministry for its support. “By the grace of Allah, Stephen will soon return home,” he said.
