Bupa Global, a leading international private medical insurance (IPMI) provider, has opened its first African office in Nairobi, Kenya, after receiving regulatory approval from Kenya’s Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA).

The move positions Kenya, East Africa’s largest economy, as a key growth market for Bupa Global.
The country’s sustained GDP growth and Vision 2030 development plan, which aims to elevate Kenya to middle-income status, align with projections that its health insurance market will nearly double from $1.42 billion in 2022 to $2.77 billion.
From day one, the Nairobi office will operate with a fully local team and non-executive directors, ensuring deep market understanding. Uditha Jayaratne will lead as CEO and Principal Officer.
Expanding Across Sub-Saharan Africa
The launch reflects broader IPMI growth trends in sub-Saharan Africa, where the sector is projected to grow at a 14-15% Compound Annual Growth Rate by 2025.
Anthony Cabrelli, Managing Director of Bupa Global, said “Kenya is a crucial market and a gateway to Africa’s vast opportunities. By establishing a local presence and investing in digital innovation, we are building an ecosystem to make world-class healthcare more accessible.”
Meeting Kenya’s Healthcare Demand
Kenya’s Vision 2030 plan prioritizes quality healthcare access, further reinforced by the Social Health Insurance Act, which mandates universal coverage.
Bupa Global’s Nairobi office will leverage digital tools to offer tailored insurance plans for SMEs, individuals, expatriates, and corporates.
