Konza Technopolis flips switch on internal smart power grid, boosting reliability for Africa’s Silicon Savannah

By Eddah Waithaka

The Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) has commenced electricity distribution through its own smart power network, enabling the flagship Smart City to manage and distribute energy internally across Phase One of the development.

The new Konza Smart Energy platform powers the next generation of digital infrastructure, innovation ecosystems, and industrial development within Africa’s Silicon Savannah.

The move significantly enhances reliability, operational efficiency, and service readiness for investors, institutions, businesses, and residential developments.

Designed as an intelligent and resilient energy system, Konza Smart Energy integrates advanced monitoring, automation, and redundancy mechanisms to ensure stable, uninterrupted power supply for high-demand digital and industrial activities.

The platform forms a core component of the city’s smart infrastructure architecture.Globally, leading smart cities operate on power reliability benchmarks exceeding 99.99% uptime, with minimal outage durations measured through internationally recognized indices.

Konza’s new distribution architecture aligns with these high-availability standards, positioning the city to support the Tier III Konza National Data Centre, advanced research institutions, precision manufacturing, and digital enterprises that depend on uninterrupted power.

At the heart of the network, Distribution Substation 2 (DS#02) receives electricity from the national grid at 66kV and steps it down to 11kV for city-wide distribution.

The system features a 2N+1 transformer configuration, ensuring redundancy and resilience consistent with global smart infrastructure best practices.

Power flows through more than 47 kilometres of underground 11kV cabling configured in a ring network, allowing for rerouting during faults and minimizing service interruptions.

Fifty-four strategically located cabin substations step down supply to low voltage, enabling efficient service to parcels, municipal facilities, and developments across Phase One.

The distribution system integrates advanced protection, monitoring, and control mechanisms, including gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and smart automation features aligned with Konza’s Smart City framework.

Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri emphasized the milestone’s significance.”The rollout of Konza Smart Energy marks a significant milestone in advancing the smart infrastructure of Konza Technopolis,” Okwiri said.

“Following the official launch of Phase 1 infrastructure in October 2025, this achievement demonstrates the steady progress we are making in building a resilient, future-ready city powered by reliable and intelligent energy systems to support Kenya’s growing digital economy.”

Power reliability directly enables economic growth. As Kenya advances its Digital Superhighway agenda and seeks to expand value-added manufacturing, data hosting, and technology-driven enterprise, dependable electricity infrastructure remains foundational.

By strengthening internal power distribution through Konza Smart Energy, Konza Technopolis directly supports Kenya’s ambition to grow its knowledge economy, enhance industrial productivity, and attract global investment.

The development supports Konza Technopolis’ growing ecosystem of universities, research institutions, technology companies, housing developments, and export-oriented industries operating within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

As Kenya accelerates its transition toward a knowledge-based economy, Konza Technopolis continues to deliver integrated infrastructure systems designed for scale, sustainability, resilience, and long-term economic impact, ensuring Africa’s Silicon Savannah competes confidently on the global stage.
